Ryan Mathews

Background

A bachelor of arts degree in design, with honors, from Cal State Long Beach, and 20 years of work where taste had to survive a budget: events, a denim label I built and ran, and more than 10 years in commercial real estate marketing.

Interior design is what I came out of school doing, and I kept doing it on the side, mostly for myself. My own house is the current proof: a 1991 single-story in Vacaville, taken apart room by room. I chose every finish and was there for every install.

How I work

Unless it’s your forever home, a 1991 house shouldn’t get overly customized bathrooms. It should read like one finished house, not four rooms done by four people. Most of what I do is making sure the decisions go together, including the ones you haven’t made yet.

What I’m drawn to: color, texture and pattern doing most of the decorating, something soft against every hard surface (even if it’s only soft to look at) and a mix of metals and wood against simple walls.

I’ll tell you when a smaller project is the better one.

I’m an interior designer, not a contractor or an architect, and I take a few projects at a time. Vacaville is home, and the work is in Solano and Napa counties.
